How to Pronounce Aunt: ANT or AHNT? US vs UK

How to pronounce aunt

Short answer: in American English, say ANT (/ænt/), like the insect. Merriam-Webster, American Heritage, Dictionary.com, Cambridge and Oxford's American dictionary all list it first. AHNT (/ɑnt/), with the "ah" of father, comes second in the same dictionaries, and Dictionary.com notes it's common in New England and eastern Virginia. For British English, Cambridge, Oxford Learner's Dictionaries and the Collins English Dictionary give only AHNT (/ɑːnt/), which in standard British English sounds like aren't.

Is it ANT or AHNT?

In the Harvard Dialect Survey, an online survey by Bert Vaux and Scott Golder completed in 2003, 75.15% of 11,713 respondents said ANT and 9.62% AHNT. Another 2.77% chose the vowel of caught, and 0.58% ain't. And 6.64% said AHNT (or AWNT) for aunts in general but ANT before a name ("Ant Mary"). Anyone could take the survey, so it isn't a random sample. On its map, the AHNT answers cluster in New England, with smaller clusters in Virginia and the Upper Midwest.

Dictionary.com's usage note, from Random House, places AHNT in New England and eastern Virginia, where every social group uses it. The Dictionary of American Regional English, cited by the Grammarphobia blog, adds that speakers there sometimes say AWNT. Grammarphobia also notes that AHNT is common among African American speakers. Elsewhere, says Dictionary.com, AHNT is mostly an educated pronunciation that schools promoted with only partial success ("Your relative isn't an insect, is she?"), and some people hear it as an affectation.

Our advice: both are correct, so match the people around you. In the US, ANT is the safe choice, listed first in every American dictionary above; if your family says AHNT, keep it. If you're learning British English, say AHNT.

Why is aunt pronounced differently?

Aunt came into Middle English from Anglo-French aunte, from Latin amita, "father's sister". Merriam-Webster dates its first known use to the 14th century. The spelling misleads: in British English, au usually sounds like "aw", as in haunt and taunt (Cambridge), and Wiktionary calls au for the "a" sound in aunt irregular.

The two aunt pronunciations come from a change in southern England. From the 17th century, the short a of cat stretched into "ah" in words like bath, laugh, dance, can't and aunt. Linguists call this the TRAP–BATH split. Long mocked as Cockney, the "ah" entered upper-class British speech only in the late 19th century. Settlers had already taken the older short a to America: the linguist M. H. Scargill, quoted by Grammarphobia, wrote that standard late-18th-century British pronunciation still rhymed aunt with ant. In the US, Random House notes, AHNT is most common in the regions that kept the closest ties with England after the change.

England never fully switched. North of a line from the Wash to the Welsh border, bath usually keeps a short a: in a 2025 YouGov study of 51,000 Britons, 52% used the short a in bath and 43% the long "ah". Many northerners also say aunt like ant, Grammarphobia notes. Australian English uses AHNT; for Canada, Wiktionary lists ANT as the majority form.

How to say aunt step by step

  1. Pick your vowel. For ANT, use the "a" of cat: jaw half open, tongue low and forward. For AHNT, use the "a" of father: jaw lower, tongue pulled back.
  2. Add the N. Touch the ridge behind your top teeth with the tip of your tongue.
  3. Finish with a light T. Release it without an "uh" after it: aunt is one syllable.

If you speak Spanish, your single a sits between the two English vowels: push it forward for ANT or back for AHNT.

Practice in a sentence

  • My aunt in Boston says AHNT, and my aunt in Ohio says ANT.
  • Aunt Rosa found ants in the picnic basket.
  • Is it ANT or AHNT? Ask your aunt.

More words that split speakers: either and route (American vs British), caramel and pecan (Americans among themselves).

What does aunt mean?

Your aunt is the sister of your mother or father, or the wife of your uncle. As a title, it takes a capital letter: Aunt Jane. In New England and the South Midland, Dictionary.com notes, it's also a respectful way to address an older woman who isn't a relative. In British English, an agony aunt is an advice columnist.
