How to Pronounce Colonel (KER-nul): Why Is There an R?

How to pronounce colonel

Short answer: say KER-nul (/ˈkɝː.nəl/), exactly like kernel: two syllables, with the "er" of her where the spelling has "olo". British English drops the R: /ˈkɜː.nəl/. Merriam-Webster, American Heritage, Dictionary.com, Cambridge, Oxford Learner's Dictionaries and Collins give no other pronunciation. The R is left over from coronel, the form English borrowed from French in the 1500s.

Is colonel pronounced like kernel?

Yes. Colonel and kernel sound the same: Cambridge gives the two words identical IPA, and Oxford Learner's Dictionaries lists them as homophones. American and British English differ only in the R:

VersionSay it likeIPAWho lists it
AmericanKER-nul, with an R/ˈkɝː.nəl/Merriam-Webster, American Heritage, Dictionary.com, Cambridge (US), Oxford Learner's (American), Collins (American), Wiktionary
BritishKER-nul, no R sound/ˈkɜː.nəl/Cambridge (UK), Oxford Learner's (British), Collins (British), Wiktionary
From the spelling"co-lo-nel"–none of these seven dictionaries

The spelling still trips people up. Merriam-Webster includes colonel in its list of commonly mispronounced words, and in a 2026 OnePoll survey of 2,000 UK adults for Škoda UK, it came 15th among Britain's most mispronounced words, with "co-lo-nel" as the mistake.

So the right colonel pronunciation is KER-nul wherever you are: with the R in American English, without it in British English, and never as "co-lo-nel".

Why is colonel pronounced "kernel"?

The spelling and the sound come from two forms of the same word:

  • Italian gave the word. A colonnello commanded the small column of soldiers at the head of a regiment. The word comes from colonna, "column", from Latin columna.
  • French changed the first L to an R. In French, colonnello became coronel. Linguists call this dissimilation: when a word has two similar sounds close together, one of them often changes. A similar swap, the other way round, is how Latin peregrinus led to pilgrim.
  • English took the R form. The word arrived from French in the mid-1500s as coronel. Merriam-Webster dates its first known use in English to 1548.
  • The spelling went back to the L. In the 1580s, writers began to spell it colonel, after the Italian; Etymonline links this to translations of Italian military manuals. By the mid-1600s, colonel was the standard spelling in English and French.
  • The sound stayed. Even after coronel vanished from writing, the R pronunciation seems never to have died out in everyday speech. In the 1600s the word had three syllables; from the late 1600s it began to shrink to two, leaving "kernel".

French later changed its pronunciation to match the spelling, so today's French colonel has an L. Spanish and Portuguese kept coronel, R and all.

How to say colonel step by step

  1. Count two syllables: KER + nul. Ignore the "olo" in the spelling.
  2. Say "ker": a K, then the vowel of her. In American English, curl the tip of your tongue back for the R; in British English, hold the vowel and skip the R.
  3. Add a weak "nul": put the tip of your tongue behind your top teeth for the N and keep it there for the L. The vowel in between is barely there, as at the end of journal.
  4. Stress the first syllable: KER-nul, never "co-lo-NEL".

Common mistakes:

  • Saying the first L. "Co-lo-nel" follows the spelling, and it's close to how French says the word today, not English.
  • Copying your own language. French and Italian speakers say every L in their word (colonel, colonnello); English skips the first one. Spanish and Portuguese coronel matches the old English form, but English cut it to two syllables, stressed on the first: KER-nul, not koh-roh-NEL.

Practice in a sentence

  • The colonel inspected the troops at dawn.
  • Colonel and kernel sound exactly the same: KER-nul.
  • She was promoted from lieutenant colonel to colonel.

What is a colonel?

A colonel is a senior military officer. In the US Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Space Force, colonel ranks above lieutenant colonel and below brigadier general, and the insignia is a silver eagle; the Navy's equivalent is captain. In the British Army, a colonel ranks below a brigadier. In the US, colonel is also an honorary title: the Kentucky colonel is the highest title of honor the state of Kentucky awards, and it's how Harland Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, became Colonel Sanders.
