15 Italian tongue twisters (scioglilingua), with translations

Italian flips the framing: not tongue twisters but scioglilingua — tongue looseners. The optimism is very Italian, and slightly false advertising, because the national champion involves thirty-three people from Trento entering a city all at once.

The big two

  1. Trentatré Trentini entrarono a Trento, tutti e trentatré trotterellando. Thirty-three Trentines entered Trento, all thirty-three trotting. The TR-cluster monument — Italy's Peter Piper.

  2. Sopra la panca la capra campa, sotto la panca la capra crepa. On the bench the goat lives; under the bench the goat dies. P/C flips; deceptively short, universally failed on round three.

The classics

— Apelles, son of Apollo, made a ball of chicken skin; all the fish came to the surface to see the chicken-skin ball made by Apelles son of Apollo. (The full circular version is the endurance test)
  2. Tre tigri contro tre tigri. — Three tigers against three tigers. (×5 — same trap as Spanish "tres tristes tigres," and just as lethal)
  3. Chi ama chiama chi ama... — Who loves, calls whom they love... (KI/KYA melody)
— On the board, cut the garlic; don't cut the tablecloth... (The GL sound — Italian's one genuinely alien consonant for English speakers)
  5. Trentatré trentini... ×3 fast (different sport from ×1)

More to drill

— O slave with the nutcracker, what are you cracking? (SKI/SKYA)
  2. Ti ci stizzisci? E stizziscitici pure! — You get annoyed at it? Fine, get annoyed then! (The untranslatable pronoun-pileup)
— A rare black frog wandered on the sand one evening... (Rolled-R aria)
  4. Se l'arcivescovo di Costantinopoli si disarcivescoviscostantinopolizzasse... — If the archbishop of Constantinople were to de-archbishop-of-Constantinople himself... (Italy's entry in the international "impossible bureaucratic verb" contest, alongside the Spanish ENT doctor)
  5. Due tazze strette in due strette tazze. — Two cups squeezed into two narrow cups.
— I have bait in my pocket and I'm off fishing. (SK/SH border)
  7. Nove navi nuove navigavano. — Nine new ships were sailing. (N/V waves)
— thread through a hole; F/L precision

For learners

Scioglilingua concentrate the three Italian sounds English speakers fake: the rolled R (#10 — same fight as Spanish, same drills), the GL palatal (#6 — say "million" and delete the "mi"), and double consonants (#12 — "tazze" vs "tase" changes the word; Italian hears the length even when you don't).
