20 F Tongue Twisters (F/V and F/TH Drills)

20 F tongue twisters: one precise contact point

F is friction: top teeth resting on the bottom lip, air hissing through. Miss the contact by a few millimeters and F blurs into H or nothing at all. And for many learners (Japanese, Korean, some Filipino speakers), F is genuinely foreign — the mouth substitutes P or H, so "coffee" becomes "cohee" and "fifty" becomes "pipty."

Classic F runs

  1. Four furious friends fought for the phone.
  2. Fresh French fried fly fritters.
  3. Fred's friends fried Fritos for Friday's food.
  4. A flea and a fly flew up in a flue.
  5. Five frantic frogs fled from fifty fierce fishes.
  6. Fine fresh fish for you.
  7. Fifty-five flags freely flutter from the floating frigate.
  8. Frank's fancy fan fluttered fast.
  9. If a fig fell from a fig tree, how far would the fig fall?
  10. Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear...

F vs V (voiceless vs voiced — same lip position)

  1. Five very furry vests.
  2. Fan the vans, van the fans.
  3. Vera flew five vivid flags.
  4. A fine view of five fine vines.

F vs TH (the learner's trap)

"Three" said as "free" is the single loudest accent marker in English. F is lip-teeth; TH is tongue-teeth. Feel the difference:

  1. Three free fleas flew through the fog.
  2. Fred threw three free throws.
  3. Thin fins, fine things.
  4. First things first: three fifths, then four fourths.

Endurance F

  1. A fly and a flea in a flue were imprisoned, so what could they do? Said the fly, "Let us flee!" "Let us fly!" said the flea. So they flew through a flaw in the flue.
  2. Forty fair finches flying fast, few finches flying first.

How to drill F

  1. Find the bite. Top teeth gently on bottom lip — you should be able to hold a continuous "ffff" for five seconds, steady as a fan.
  2. Mirror check for P-substituters. If your lips close fully, that's P. Teeth must stay visible on the lip.
  3. F/TH pairs ten times slowly: fin–thin, free–three, first–thirst. Your ear learns the contrast alongside your mouth — the TH page drills the other side.
  4. Record and score. F/TH and F/P substitutions are invisible to your own ear. The tongue twister test hears them in 15 seconds.

Same lips, voice on: V tongue twisters.
