18 W tongue twisters: round lips, no teeth, ever
W is the anti-V: lips rounded into a small O, teeth nowhere near the lip. German, Dutch, Russian, and many Indian-English speakers substitute V ("vhat vill ve do?") because their languages don't have the rounded glide. The fix is embarrassingly physical: if your lips aren't in kissing position at the start of "what," it's not a W.
The classics
- How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? (Full version + the 700-pound answer — famous page.)
- Which witch is which?
- Whether the weather is warm, whether the weather is hot, we have to put up with the weather, whether we like it or not.
- Wayne went to Wales to watch walruses.
- William always wears a very warm woolen vest in winter.
Clean W runs
- Wide-eyed walruses waddle westward.
- We want wide waffles with warm walnuts.
- Willy's wooden whistle wouldn't whistle well.
- Twelve twins twirled twelve twigs. (W hiding inside TW)
- Wild winds whipped the white waves.
- The western wind was wet and wild.
- Walter wondered where Wanda went Wednesday.
W vs V (the accent divider)
- Very wet vests went west.
- Wine and vine, vine and wine.
- Vivian wailed while William vowed.
- We viewed the vast west wall.
Endurance W
- If two witches would watch two watches, which witch would watch which watch?
- Why do you cry, Willy? Why do you cry? Why, Willy? Why, Willy? Why, Willy, why?
How to drill W
- The kiss check. Mirror: every W starts with visibly rounded, pushed-forward lips. "What, would, we" — three rounds each, exaggerated.
- Teeth alarm. If your top teeth touch your bottom lip at any point during "west," you just said "vest." That contact is the entire V/W difference.
- The oo-slide. Say "oo" and glide into the vowel: "oo-est" → "west." W is technically just a fast "oo."
- Score the pairs. Vine–wine confusion is inaudible to those who have it. The tongue twister test scores clarity in 15 seconds and settles it objectively.
