18 CH Tongue Twisters (CH/SH Contrast Drills)

18 CH tongue twisters: the T hiding inside

CH is secretly two sounds welded together: a T-stop that releases into SH. Say "church" slowly and you'll feel the tongue tap before the hiss. Drop that tap — as French, Portuguese, and many other learners naturally do — and "chair" becomes "share," "watch" becomes "wash," and a whole family of English words merges into mush.

Clean CH runs

  1. Cheerful children chant charming church chimes.
  2. Chester chose chunky cheese for the cheeseburger.
  3. Charlie chews his choosy chewing gum cheerfully.
  4. Chickens chase cheeky chipmunks.
  5. Church benches crutch, church benches crutch. (×3)
  6. Chop chilled cherries, chill chopped cherries.
  7. Richard's chair reached the church porch.
  8. Each peach, cheap chips, teach chess.

CH vs SH (the merger-buster)

Chair–share, watch–wash, chip–ship. If these sound the same when you say them, this section is your homework:

  1. She sells chips and ships cheap sheets.
  2. The chef chose the shiny chopped shallots.
  3. Watch the wash, wash the watch.
  4. Sharon's chair, Cheryl's share.
  5. Cheap ship trip. (×5 — the killer)
  6. Chip shop chips and ship shop slips.

Endurance CH

  1. How much ground would a groundhog grind if a groundhog could grind ground? (CH's cousin — the DGE/G family rides along)
  2. If a church chills chips, which chip does the church chill?
  3. The teacher chided the cheeky child who chucked chalk at the chattering children.
  4. Choppers chop, shoppers shop, and watchers watch chopped shops.

How to drill CH

  1. Find the T. Say "t… sh… t-sh… ch." Feel the tongue tap the ridge before the hiss — that tap is the whole sound.
  2. Contrast pairs ×10: chair–share, chip–ship, watch–wash, catch–cash. Slow, feeling the tap appear and disappear.
  3. Final CH. "Watch," "much," "teach" — endings lose the T-tap first in fast speech.
  4. Score it. The CH/SH merger is self-invisible: your brain hears the word you meant. The tongue twister test hears the word you said — 15 seconds, clarity per sound.

The hissing half of the pair lives here: SH tongue twisters.
