18 SH tongue twisters: the sound that owns the genre

The most famous tongue twister in English — she sells seashells — is an SH drill. That's not a coincidence: SH sits millimeters from S in the mouth (tongue pulled slightly back, lips slightly rounded), and that tiny distance is the most-crossed border in fast speech. Even native speakers smear it; for Japanese, Greek, and Dutch speakers the border barely exists.

How to drill SH

1. Feel the slide. Say "sss → shhh" in one breath, feeling the tongue pull back and lips round. That slide is the whole skill; do it ten times slowly.
2. The hush anchor. SH is the "quiet down" sound — say a long, steady "shhh" for five seconds. Wobbles mean unstable tongue position.
3. Pairs ×10: see–she, sip–ship, sock–shock (S/SH); share–chair, wash–watch (SH/CH).
